I have a lot of feelings about ChatGPT. Some I’ve already shared (“Creating Crap Faster Isn’t an Improvement”), some I plan to share soon as part of other lines of thought. But a friend of mine threw down a challenge and it proved to be the perfect opportunity to put ChatGPT to the test.
I had just published the last part of my “Rings of Power” series, and had announced my intention to immediately give the same treatment to the original “Lord of the Rings” books as well as Tolkien’s extended universe. (You can find part 1 here, and part 2 here).
To this, my friend exclaimed “Now do TWILIGHT!!”
After expressing my absolute disgust at the idea, and having a good laugh about it, I realized that here was the perfect opportunity to see if AI-driven writing was up to a human standard. At worst, I’d discover that nothing about my penchant for finding IT lessons in sources like the spiderverse, or the movie Logan. or old 70’s shows, was special.
I’m fairly certain the worst didn’t occur, but I’ll let you be the judge.
For your reading pleasure (or something) I now present ChatGPT’s response to: the query: “Write a 3000 word article on things the Twilight series of movies can teach someone about working in I.T.“
The Twilight series of movies, based on the best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer, may not seem like an obvious choice for learning about working in the field of information technology (IT). However, upon closer examination, there are several lessons that can be gleaned from the experiences of the main characters, Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, as well as the other members of the Cullen family.
The importance of strong communication skills: Throughout the series, the Cullens work together effectively as a team, largely due to their ability to communicate openly and honestly with each other. In the IT field, strong communication skills are essential for working with both technical and non-technical colleagues, as well as for explaining complex concepts to clients and customers.
The value of diversity and inclusion: The Cullen family is made up of vampires with a wide range of talents and abilities, including medicine, engineering, and even playing the piano. This diversity allows them to approach problems from different angles and come up with creative solutions. In the IT industry, it is important to foster a culture of diversity and inclusion, as it can lead to more innovative thinking and better decision-making.
The importance of staying up to date with technology: As vampires, the Cullens have been around for centuries and have witnessed firsthand the rapid evolution of technology. They are always seeking to learn and adapt to new developments, whether it be medical equipment or computer systems. In the IT field, it is essential to continuously educate oneself and stay up to date with the latest technologies and best practices.
The need for strong problem-solving skills: Throughout the series, the Cullens face numerous challenges and obstacles, ranging from protecting Bella from danger to navigating their relationships with humans. They are able to overcome these challenges through their intelligence, resourcefulness, and ability to think critically. In the IT field, strong problem-solving skills are crucial for troubleshooting technical issues and finding creative solutions to complex problems.
The importance of ethics and responsibility: Despite their supernatural powers, the Cullens are deeply aware of the responsibility that comes with their abilities. They are careful to use their powers for good and to respect the free will of others. In the IT field, it is important to adhere to ethical principles and to consider the potential consequences of one’s actions.
The need for teamwork and collaboration: Throughout the series, the Cullens work together as a team to protect Bella and achieve their goals. They rely on each other’s strengths and support each other through difficult times. In the IT field, teamwork and collaboration are essential for achieving success, whether it be on a project or in solving a technical issue.
The value of perseverance and determination: The Cullen family faces numerous challenges and setbacks throughout the series, but they never give up and continue to persevere. In the IT field, it is important to be resilient and to not give up when faced with difficult challenges or setbacks.
In conclusion, the Twilight series may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about working in the IT field. However, upon closer examination, it is clear that the experiences and lessons of the main characters, Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, as well as the other members of the Cullen family, can provide valuable insights into the importance of strong communication skills, diversity and inclusion, staying up to date with technology, strong problem-solving skills, ethics and responsibility, teamwork and collaboration, and perseverance and determination. So, these are some of the things that the Twilight series of movies can teach someone about working in the IT field.
